Sport in Brief

Long given captaincy

Rugby league: Leeds Rhinos will collect the League Leaders’ Shield after their game at home to London Broncos tonight, while St Helens travel to play Bradford Bulls with seven regulars injured, four fewer than for the Easter Monday trip to Bradford, which led to the suspensions of Sean Long and Martin Gleeson for betting against their own team. Long has been handed the captaincy on his return after three months.

Cooke finds form

Cycling: Nicole Cooke, who failed to win a medal at the Athens Olympic Games, has won the first stage of the Tour of Tuscany. The 21-year-old from the Vale of Glamorgan was two seconds ahead of Svetlana Boubnenkova, of Russia, in the first day’s 40km stage.
