Williams to launch appeal

Motor racing: Williams- BMW have decided to appeal against the penalty handed to Ralf Schumacher after Sunday’s German Grand Prix. The German driver was blamed for causing a six-car crash at the first corner and punished with a relegation of ten places on the grid at the next race in Hungary on Sunday, August 24. Toyota have announced that their drivers, Olivier Panis and Cristiano da Matta, who finished fifth and sixth respectively in Germany, will stay on for the 2004 season, ruling out the possibility of Jacques Villeneuve moving there.

Henman through

Tennis: Tim Henman will face David Nalbandian, of Argentina, in the second round of the Masters Series event in Montreal. Fernando González, of Chile, withdrew with a knee injury after losing the first set 6-2 last night. Greg Rusedski is also through after a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Nicolas Lapentti, of Ecuador

Price pulls out

Golf: Nick Price, twice the US PGA champion, has withdrawn from this year’s event at Oak Hill, Rochester, New York to spend time with his family. Price, a winner in 1992 and 1994, last missed the US PGA Championship in 1991, when he was replaced by John Daly, the ninth alternate, who won the event.

Cumbria on a roll

Bowls: Cumbria, whose men have been prolific title-winners for the past five years, beat kent 46-24 to win the National Express womens’s inter-county two-rink championship at Leamington Spa. This was the first time Cumbria’s women have reached the final.
