Sport in Brief

Boxing

ITV1, which for the past seven months has broadcast shows featuring only Amir Khan’s bouts, will screen Carl Froch’s WBC super-middleweight title eliminator against Denis Inkin at Nottingham Arena on March 29. It will be the third broadcaster for Froch, the unbeaten British champion, who began his professional career on the BBC but has had his recent bouts screened on Sky. Khan will not be travelling to the US for his next bout. Instead it is likely to be confirmed next week that his next contest will be at Bolton Arena on April 5.

Snooker

John Higgins is through to the semi-finals of the Malta Cup at the Portomaso Hilton after remaining unbeaten in topping group A with a draw and three wins, the last of which was 5-1 over Joe Perry, in which he compiled breaks of 64, 47, 82 and 70. The Scot will play Ken Doherty, who finished top of group B thanks to his 5-1 win over Neil Robertson.

Mark Royal, the No 13 seed from Stowmarket, won the WBT Welsh International Open title in Llanelli yesterday when he recorded a 7-5, 11-6 win in the final over Greg Harlow, the former world No1. Royal, who trailed 6-1 in the second set, turned on a relentless display, scoring the next ten shots without reply to win his first World Bowls Tour ranking event.
