ZCU chief executive resigns

Cricket: Vince Hogg, the Zimbabwe Cricket Union (ZCU) chief executive, has resigned. Hogg has notified Peter Chingoka, the ZCU chairman, and the 12-man board of directors of his decision and will leave after the ZCU annual meeting scheduled for August 8.

Hogg said: “A ZCU statement will be issued shortly.” His resignation comes after the ZCU agreed last week to suspend its Test matches for the remainder of 2004, after a row over 15 sacked white players because of the dismissal of Heath Streak, the captain. Streak had objected to selection policies, which he claimed were compromising the success of the national team.

McRae ruled out

Motor rallying: Wales Rally GB, Britain’s round of the World Championship, will be without a leading home driver for the first time in more than a decade after Colin McRae said yesterday that he had not raised the funds to enter a car for the September event. McRae has been out of world rallying all year after losing his drive with Citroën and then being turned down by Subaru. Plans to run the 1995 champion in a customer Subaru foundered this week when the estimated £300,000 budget fell through. “I am disappointed,” McRae said.

Dinosaur drugs

Drugs in sport: Dick Pound, the head of the World Anti-Doping Agency, believes that erythropoietin (EPO) and tetrahydrogestrinone (THG), substances widely used in several sports, have become “dinosaur” drugs because they are so readily detectable. In an interview with Eurosport to be screened next week, Pound is scathing about the widespread drug-taking in American professional sports and says that THG, which led to the two-year ban on Dwain Chambers, was “ finished”.

Johnston beaten

Bowls: Margaret Johnston’s hopes of winning three British Isles titles at Les Creux in Jersey were dashed when she was beaten in the semi-finals of the singles and pairs championships. Gean O’Neil, of Jersey, is causing problems for the organisers, who are extending today’s schedule because she is still in both singles and pairs.
