Sport in Brief

Franchitti steals the show

Motor sport: Dario Franchitti won his second Indy Racing League event of the season on a day of dominance by British drivers. The Scot was the man to beat all day in the Indy 225 at Pikes Peak in Colorado and only Adrian Fernandez, of Mexico, prevented a British clean sweep.

Fernandez was second, with Dan Wheldon and Darren Manning, both of England, third and fourth respectively, while Mark Taylor, from London, was back in fourteenth.

Rugby league: Terry Newton, the Wigan Warriors hooker, will face an RFL disciplinary hearing today for an alleged high tackle in Friday’s victory over St Helens. Newton was referred to the disciplinary committee after the RFL studied footage of his attempted tackle on Jon Wilkin, the St Helens forward, who was carried off on a stretcher after the off-the-ball incident.

Champions crash

Bowls: John Rednall and Clive Webb, the defending champions from the Felixstowe and Suffolk club, were beaten 24-11 by Simon Gilbert and Andrew Smith, of Warwickshire, in the second round of the National Express English men’s pairs championship at Worthing. The highly rated Greg Moon and Gary Lucas also went out, losing 28-14 to Tony King and David Colbourne.
