Sound of sonnets

Sir, We are often told that Radio 4 is the best speech channel in the world. Instead of the awful concatenation of sound which is the UK Theme (letters, Jan 26 and 28), would it not be more appropriate to start the day with a reading of a piece of prose or poetry?

There could be a different item for each day of the week or, better still, of the year, which would allow 365 pieces or, in a leap year, 366. Imagine lying in bed listening to a Shakespearean sonnet or a Churchillian speech.

Sir, What could be a more pleasant awakening for Radio 4 listeners than to hear broadcast a few minutes of our real dawn chorus of British birds?
