Sorted: children’s trainers

Put their best foot forward. Charlotte Hawkins, a podiatrist, tests the latest sports shoes and finds that good looks and comfort needn’t brankrupt parents

CLARKS BOOTLEG KRYPTON, FROM £29

Verdict A well designed, flexible trainer in different width fittings. The heel cup is cushioned and supportive, and as the trainer is lightweight, less stress is put on feet and knees when running. Clarks’ provision of an excellent in-store fitting service means parents can ensure the correct fit for their child. Stockists 08705 134830

MARKS & SPENCER SMART STEP TRAINER, £18

Verdict A lightweight, flexible trainer with a good shock-absorbing sole. Its design gives plenty of room for the toes, which means no pressure is placed on the child’s soft bones. The heel cup is sturdy yet not too high or hard. This is important to prevent the shoe rubbing, which could cause tendon pain. Stockists 0845 302 1234

NIKE MONSTER SHOX, £70

Verdict An expensive, brightly-coloured shoe with an unnecessarily gimmicky sprung-heel design. Its plus points are that it’s lightweight and has a soft heel cup, which means that it will cushion running feet well. But the high cost delivers few added benefits, and the design is more about attracting children with trendiness. Stockists 0800 0561640

NIKE AIR AIM LEATHER 2, £35

Verdict A narrow, heavy trainer, which may not be suitable for all foot types. The heel cup of the shoe is rigid, but the sole is well-cushioned and flexible. If it fits well, it will do a good job, but if the bones of the foot are crushed, pressure is placed on the joints. Ill-fitting shoes can cause the toes to become permanently clawed. NEW BALANCE 574, £33

Verdict A good lightweight trainer. The heel cup is flexible but supportive, and not so high that it may constrict the Achilles tendon. This is the only trainer assessed that has a removable liner for easy cleaning — an hygienic way to avoid trainer odour. It also allows more room, if required, for the fitting of specialist insoles. Stockists 0800 3891055

WOOLWORTHS WEDGE TRAINER, £12.99

Verdict This wedge trainer has a hard, rigid base with poor shock absorption, and a high, stiff heel. This heel height is not recommended as a fall could give rise to severe ankle sprain. Stockists 01706 862789
