Song of songs

Director: Josh Appignanesi, 81min

Stars: Nathalie Press, Amber Agar, Joel Chalfen

On selected release

This is the kind of film that seems to go out of its way to discourage its audience. Set within the closeted Orthodox Jewish community of Hendon in North London, the story will alienate many with its gloomy themes of obsession and incest. The casting of My Summer of Love’s Press could create interest, but Appignanesi insists on shooting the back of her head for the first half of the film.

Yet Song of Songs is a daringly original debut. The atmosphere may be stifling, but this only goes to highlight Press’s performance.
