Sold along with the watchtower

A fairytale fortress in the Scottish Highlands was sold at auction in Glasgow yesterday for £425,000.

Main Lodge near the Angus Hills looks like something from a picture book with a watchtower, gables and turret. The miniature sandstone castle was built in 1873 by the Dundee Water Commissioners to house the keeper of Lintrathen Reservoir.

A category B-listed building, it sits by the reservoir in 2 acres of mature grounds and provided a stunning home for generations of water workers.

But Atholl Duncan, for Scottish Water, said: “It has lain empty and boarded up for a number of years. The money raised from its sale will be reinvested in the water industry for the benefit of our customers across Scotland.”

The castle, which has now been bought by a woman bidder, could cost about £100,000 to renovate if it is to be turned into a modern family home.
