Sober as a judge?

Sir, Further to FE Smith’s “drunk as a judge” comment (letter, Aug 24), until the creation of the Supreme Court the judges above the Court of Appeal were law lords. It was a common saying at the Bar: “As sober as a judge; as drunk as a lord; and in between are the lords justices of appeal.”
