Cheer up
I’m fine, thanks.

You misheard me. Chirrip. Chirrrr-ip.
You’re a blackbird?

No! A robin.
OK. Is this a game?

No. Just my strange way of bringing the conversation round to radio.
You’re auditioning for Tweet of the Day?

No, but there’s going to be more tweeting. Radio 4’s Tweet of the Day slot was so successful that Radio 3 is going to run two-minute stretches of birdsong during its Sunday morning breakfast programme.
They should do it every day.

It’s a start. The controller of Radio 3, Alan Davey, said that he hoped that the new slot and other birdsong-inspired performances “will offer our audiences a real chance to reflect and catch up”. It follows the success of “slow TV” programmes, including an hour of birdsong and a two-hour canal journey.
Radio 3 kind of is slow radio already, isn’t it?

Only to a barbarian like you.
I’ll have you know that I listen to a lot of birdsong. To drown out the babble of my colleagues at work I often tune in on YouTube.

So do you know your stuff?
Tea-cher. Tea-cher. Tea-cher.

What’s that?
Great tit. Du doo du, du du.

Woodpigeon.
Very good. Sometimes I can go for hours listening online.

And how do you feel after that?
Cuckoo.
