Changes to the Modern Slavery Bill made in the House of Lords ‘will help to prevent human suffering’

Sir, Your leader (Mar 7) mentioned the domestic workers who come here on visas that tie them to a single named employer. Ever since 1988 many have suffered extreme exploitation and abuse from employers, usually those from the Middle East.

Between 1998 and 2012 these workers were allowed to change employer within the same work category. This protected them and allowed them to claim for unpaid wages, overtime and holiday pay. During the passage of the Modern Slavery Bill, the House of Lords, with all-party support, has effectively restored the pre-2012 position.

I urge the government to accept this change, as it will not increase immigration but will help to prevent human suffering.
