SKO’s work spans a range of family law matters, from high-value financial provision to pure child law. It has particular experience and expertise where there are unusual or novel elements, such as jurisdictional issues, or where there is a particular need to develop the law.

In the case of HAJ v NJ in July this year, a Euromillions lottery winner husband transferred £8 million to his parents during a “messy divorce” to prevent his estranged wife from securing her fair share, the Court of Session ruled. SKO acted for the wife, who was awarded £4.8 million, half of the couple’s fortune.

SKO also acts for local authorities in England and Wales over the recognition and enforcement of orders relating to children placed in care facilities in Scotland. In such cases the Court of Session is asked to provide a remedy because there is a gap in the law.
