A ship’s captain is looking for a new recruit to join his calamity-hit vessel in the Atlantic after his first mate quit in the wake of their ninth rescue.

Steve Shapiro and Bob Weise, both 71, bought the ageing 40ft Nora in Norway and planned to sail her to the US. However, in the past seven months the pair have called out the emergency services in Norway, Denmark, Scotland, Ireland and England as engines broke down and propellers snapped.

After his family caught wind of their numerous rescues, Mr Weise has now quit, leaving his captain to find a new shipmate.

Mr Shapiro, a screenwriter from California, is still determined to make the transatlantic crossing and has appealed for crew members “looking for adventure”. He said that Mr Weise had never expressed any concerns himself, but returned home in response to pleas from his family.

The Nora is being repaired in Hayle, Cornwall, after the pair set her on fire when a candle was left burning.
