Silence is golden

Behaviour at the one-minute silence at Wembley

Sir, Simon Barnes’s comment that the one-minute silence at Wembley was 27 seconds of effing and blinding is unfair (Sport, Feb 9).

My wife and I were at the game and the silence was impeccably observed by the 80,000-plus fans, except for one person who shouted out and two different people who told that person to shut up.

Slandering the vast majority of well-behaved fans serves no purpose and the England fan already gets a bad enough press. It is particularly sad that it occurred in an article that was arguing for more respect for, and from, the average fan.
