The relationships that make a life: Hermione Norris

Actress Hermione Norris, 41, made her name in Cold Feet, before starring in TV dramas Spooks and Kingdom. She was born and still lives in London.

My children?

? are the best things in my world. I have a five-year-old boy, Wilf, and a girl called Hero, who is 20 months, and they bring me so much joy. When I am working, it is very intense. I leave at 6am and get home at 7pm, and for the past few years I have been shooting Spooks and Kingdom back to back, which takes about eight months. The rest of the year, however, I am at home and all my time is theirs.

My poor husband

The last three years have been difficult. I look back and I wonder how we got through them. I shoot Spooks, and then we all move up to Norfolk to shoot Kingdom, which is Simon’s show [he owns a production company]. I have been pregnant, given birth and had a young toddler during all of that. Although I am very professional, when I am working with Simon I behave badly and get complacent. I presume people know what I am doing, so I get lax about calling back and staying in touch. He is so patient to put up with it all.

My brother and sisters

We basically brought each other up. There are four of us so we did everything for each other and spent all our time together. We didn’t even have to speak – we had our own silent language. Now, although we are not in each other’s pockets, if the s*** hits the fan, they would be there in a second.

Our dog

Millie, a Jack Russell, has been part of the family for the past seven years. She is like one of the children – wherever we go, Millie goes. She is even in Kingdom and has been on the cover of the Radio Times. She has a more successful career than I do.

My children’s babysitter

A good nanny is like gold and Lauren is fantastic. We have had three nannies up to this point and if they’re not good they don’t last. My life is so busy that I need someone who is organised as well as good at their job. Without her, my life would fall apart.

My agent

I have been with Sue Latimer for ten years and she is incredibly supportive. A lot of people in this industry discourage women from having children, but she always told me to do it. She is respectful of life and its demands and considers them before my career, which is amazing.
