Sir, Your article on Ushaw College in Co Durham (“Catholic hoard conceals vestments fit for a king,” Aug 22) mentions that 1958 was the high point in terms of its student numbers. That was also the year of the college’s 150th anniversary, and it was marked by one of the very first stagings of a son et lumière in Britain. The spectacle dramatised the founding and history of the college in the context of northern Catholicism from the end of the 16th century, and the combination of music, voice and lighting was an unforgettable experience for the crowds who congregated in that isolated corner of the Durham countryside on five successive nights in July nearly 60 years ago.
