An exhibition of plankton that portrays the minute sea creatures as monsters 3m long opens today. A 360-degree screen shows the plankton at 4,000 times their usual size, effectively shrinking people to the size of a grain of rice.

Ocean Drifters, at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition in Carlton House Terrace, including a 15-minute film narrated by Sir David Attenborough, is based on the cutting-edge science of Richard Kirby, a Royal Society Research Fellow at the University of Plymouth. “Plankton are hugely important and this exhibition is to try and help inform people about them. Without the plankton there wouldn’t be any fish in the sea,” said Dr Kirby.
