Short order cricket matches

Sir, Short-order evening cricket (Sport, June 22) has been played at grassroots level for many years.

Here, from the late Seventies until well into the Nineties, thanks to the generosity of Charlbury Cricket Club in providing facilities, a scratch team of local police officers and their friends took on all comers on those long midweek evenings.

They became real family evenings, with children playing around the boundary, often involving a barbecue and a post-match quiz, with considerable thirst-quenching not unknown.

I am sure that similar teams operated all over the country.

Sir, Why is Twenty20 cricket not sponsored by an optician?
