A sheriff’s deputy was shot dead while putting petrol in his car in Houston, Texas, yesterday.

Deputy Darren Goforth, 47, had driven to the petrol station after responding to a routine traffic accident about half an hour earlier.

The man in his early 20s was said to approach him from behind before opening fire. When deputy Goforth fell to the ground, the man fired more shots, police said.

Ron Hickman, Harris County Sheriff, said: “Tonight we are grieving the loss of one of our brothers. I ask that you continue to pray for Deputy Goforth’s family, friends and co-workers.

“We will not rest until this suspect has been located and justice is served to the family of deputy Darren Goforth.”

Police released an image of a man they are hunting and are also looking for a red or maroon Ford Ranger truck investigators believe he was driving.

Sheriff Hickman added: “In my 45 years in law enforcement, I can’t recall another incident so cold-blooded and cowardly.”

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office tweeted: “Deputy Darren Goforth was a 10-year veteran with the sheriff’s office. Our hearts are broken tonight.

“This was an unprovoked attack. Deputy Goforth left behind a wife and two children. Please continue to pray during this difficult time.”
