September 20: League One round up

Bradford 4 Bristol City 1

Bradford manager Colin Todd: I was pleased with the manner of the win. We had a good shape, moved the ball well, caused problems and scored some excellent goals. We’ve been threatening to do that for a while. I would like to bring in two more players to strengthen the squad.

Bristol City player-manager Brian Tinnion: It wasn’t a 4-1 result. Our keeper made one save and conceded four goals. We had passages of play where we dominated the game and Leroy Lita had a great chance when the score was 2-0. We fancied him to score, but he didn’t.

Blinder: Nicky Summerbee.

Stinker: Christian Roberts.

Brentford 1 Port Vale 0

Brentford manager Martin Allen: I thought the sending-off spoiled the game because at the time we were well on top. I couldn’t see whether it was a penalty from where I was. I was very pleased with the way we played as a team. We defended very well and looked positive going forward.

Port Vale manager Martin Foyle: (The penalty award) was a comical decision. The referee and his assistants have got their fancy kits, they are having a nice cup of tea at half-time and they go away happy but the ref has got Brentford three points — fair play to him.

Blinder: Craig James.

Stinker: Isaiah Rankin.

Chesterfield 1 Walsall 0

Chesterfield manager Roy McFarland: I thought we had a tremendous first half, probably the best we have played this season. We were a real threat and we could have come in more than just 1-0 in front. We started off OK in the second half, but then we lost it completely and Walsall took over.

Walsall player-manager Paul Merson: I’ve been in the game for 20 years and know that the one thing that gets managers the sack is the fans. I’ve seen enough to know that when they boo you off the pitch, sooner rather than later you’re going to get the sack.

Blinder: Jamal Campbell-Ryce.

Stinker: Michael Standing.

Colchester United 0 Milton Keynes Dons 1

Colchester manager Phil Parkinson: I’m very disappointed. I thought we were slow to close down the opposition and slow when we had possession. It’s a shame when you consider how well we did at Bournemouth last week and how poorly we played here.

Milton Keynes Dons manager Stuart Murdoch: I thought we deserved the win. I was very pleased for the players as we gave them a hard time in training this week because I felt in the last couple of games we hadn’t played football. I believe that’s our best performance of the season.

Blinder: Izale McLeod.

Stinker: Greg Halford.

Doncaster Rovers 1 Oldham Athletic 1

Doncaster manager Dave Penney: The wind spoiled the game but we didn’t get the ball down and pass it like we can, which was disappointing. We chose the easy option and knocked it long and didn’t play much football. We didn’t play well overall and could easily have lost it at the finish.

Oldham manager Brian Talbot: Doncaster are among the clubs that fancy their chances of going up this year and I thought we did well against them. It was a battling performance and we showed a lot of determination but we also lacked a cutting edge.

Blinder: Mark Arber.

Stinker: Jermaine McSporran.

Hartlepool United 4 Torquay United 1

Hartlepool manager Neale Cooper: We’ve had to shuffle our pack with so many injuries and it was vital we won this game. To win and score four goals is a brilliant bonus for us. Torquay made it difficult for us at times but we stuck to it and showed patience.

Torquay manager Leroy Rosenoir: We had competed so well in the first half — I was proud of the players. But it all went to pieces in the last half hour. We’ll have to dust ourselves down and get on with things, hopefully learning a lesson from a game like this.

Blinder: Antony Sweeney.

Stinker: Martin Phillips.

Huddersfield Town 0 Barnsley 2

Huddersfield manager Peter Jackson: Our first-half performance was disappointing and we allowed Stephen McPhail to dominate, so we made some changes after the break that seemed to make the difference. If we had got a goal back early in the second half it might had been different.

Barnsley manager Paul Hart: We have been through a lot of football and strife in the last couple of months but in that time the players have kept working hard. It is only a beginning but two clean sheets on the bounce helps us recover from our poor start to the season.

Blinder: Jonathan Worthington.

Stinker: Steve Yates.

Peterborough United 2 Hull City 3

Peterborough manager Barry Fry: Our lack of firepower cost us and, in the circumstances, the result isn’t a disaster. After going behind we wanted to throw everything at Hull, but in the end all we could do was put midfielder Danny Sonner up front because Clive Platt could not last any longer with his calf.

Hull manager Peter Taylor: Stuart Elliott has been in tremendous form all season, and he has been delivering this sort of performance on a regular basis. We scored three very good goals and could have scored more, but some of our play was first class.

Blinder: Ryan France.

Stinker: Clive Platt.

Sheffield Wednesday chairman Dave Allen: Unfortunately the team hasn’t delivered and Chris Turner hasn’t been able to deliver so obviously we must go forward and to do that we must part company. That’s the position as of now. We will hopefully make a new appointment next week.

Bournemouth manager Sean O’Driscoll: It was always going to be a difficult game for us but we did what we had to do. Sometimes it works for you, sometimes it doesn’t. The players had to use their brains — we were clever at times on the ball.

Blinder: Wade Elliott.

Stinker: Guy Branston.

Stockport County 1 Luton Town 0

Stockport manager Sammy McIlroy: Again we were caught out by our own mistakes. A few things were said at half-time, and the lads rolled their sleeves up, but it was another battle lost. Managers are judged on their results and my results this year have been pathetic.

Luton manager Mike Newell: I thought this was going to be the day for us. We have to keep our hunger for four or five goals — it shows that you mean business. We’re never happy, we’re always looking for more, it doesn’t matter who we’re playing.

Blinder: Rowan Vine.

Stinker: Mark Bridge-Wilkinson.

Tranmere Rovers 1 Wrexham 1

Tranmere manager Brian Little: We should have won an awkward game full of all sorts of silly little things. I would have taken a point at half-time, but later we created some very good chances and we should have won. The effort and spirit was right but not the finishing.

Wrexham manager Denis Smith: I threw an empty water bottle on to the pitch in frustration. The referee said it could have hurt someone. You can get into trouble for breathing these days. The official was still talking to my players after awarding a free-kick when he allowed the kick to be taken.

Blinder: Jason McAteer.

Stinker: Michael Jackson.
