September 11: Championship round up

BARNSLEY (0) 2 STOKE (2) 2

Paul Hayes capped Barnsley’s second-half fightback with an equaliser as Andy Ritchie’s team rescued a draw at Oakwell. Goals from Clint Hill and Luke Chadwick put Stoke 2-0 up as they sought their first away win of the season before Tommy Wright, a Barnsley substitute, scored with his first touch. Ritchie said: “We’ve had two draws at home now, but we’re still not getting that elusive win. Once we get that, then the lads will get more confidence.” Tony Pulis, the Stoke manager, said that his team played too deep in the second half, but “the first half was as good as I’ve seen us play.”

BIRMINGHAM (1) 2 HULL (0) 1

David Gold, the Birmingham chairman, celebrated his 70th birthday by watching Steve Bruce’s team get their promotion challenge back on track with a home win over Hull, the division’s bottom club. Birmingham were cruising to their fourth win in six games after opening a two-goal lead through DJ Campbell and Nicklas Bendtner, the striker on loan from Arsenal, before David Livermore pulled a goal for Hull.

Bruce said: “We took our foot off the gas and conceded a horrible goal and once that went in, everyone was edgy.”

Colchester picked up their first away win in the Coca-Cola Championship thanks to a goal by Kevin Watson from open play and a penalty by Chris Iwelumo. After the break, Richard Garcia was tripped in the area by John McGreal and Iwelumo slammed home the resulting penalty before Andy Gray’ s consolation goal. Steve Cotterill, the Burnley manager, said: “ It’s a travesty that we haven’t got something out of the game. They must be riding out of town with sombreros on. It’s a game that we dominated.”

The home team took the lead through a stunning 20-yard strike by Chris Birchall, before Kevin Kyle made it two on his home debut and Stern John added a third. Micky Adams, the Coventry manager, said: “We’ve now had three clean sheets on the spin in the league and again we defended terrifically well. Plymouth still have not won at home this season after they could only draw against QPR, despite dominating the match at Home Park. Rangers took the lead in the sixteenth minute when Dexter Blackstock scored with a right-foot shot, but Sylvan Ebanks-Blake equalised for the home team with his first league goal of the season. SOUTHEND (0) 0 SHEFFIELD WED (0) 0

Paul Sturrock, the Sheffield Wednesday manager, was left to bemoan his team’s bad luck after the goalless draw at Roots Hall. Sturrock was satisfied with a point as Wednesday continued their unbeaten league run away from home, but he emphasised that it was at home that his side needed to turn things around after a draw and two defeats. “I was disappointed, but our confidence has been eroded. We have hit the woodwork so many times it is unbelievable,” he said. Steve Tilson, the Southend manager, said: “It’s another point towards our target.”
