THE Prime Minister and other holders of political office in the UK are not defined as “workers” under the terms of European working time legislation. This means that they are not affected by European legislation on working hours.

The Arts Council England plans to spend £1,759,165 on the promotion of poetry for the period 2005-06, and £1,617,152 in 2006-07.

Items valued at more than £100 that have gone missing from the Department for International Development in the past 12 months include: one pocket PC, six laptop computers, three bicycles and four lampposts.

The Red Kite Reproduction Programme has involved the release of 292 young red kites in four separate areas of England between 1989 and 2005. It has been a great success with an estimated 385 breeding pairs now established in three different areas. The Great Bustard Reproduction Project is also doing well, and has involved the release of 54 birds on Salisbury Plain since 2004. Of these birds, 27 were known to be alive and well as of October 2005.

The number of visits to NHS walk-in centres has risen steadily since January 2003. For the period January to March 2003, 335,358 attendances are recorded, rising to 389,784 for the same period in 2004 and 571,305, again for the same period, in 2005.

The Department of Trade and Industry says that it has taken steps to encourage companies to develop the careers of their female staff, including the promotion of best practice and publications that help managers to reduce barriers to women’s advancement. The Government is also working with key partners to encourage schoolgirls to take up careers that are traditionally seen as male: the concentration of women in particular job sectors is one of the main causes of the gender pay gap.
