The demonstration by Hearts fans against Vladimir Romanov after the Rangers game last week was an embarrassment, especially so soon after all the protests to get rid of Chris Robinson. The Hearts support turned a blind eye to Romanov’s interference last season because the team managed to keep on winning, and continually revered the owner. Little surprise then that it all went to his head and now those same fans must suffer the consequences for massaging Romanov’s ego.

Geoff Bolton (letters, last week) suggests the bottom team in the Premiership plays the top team in the Championship home and away. My alternative is to promote the top three, then have the teams in fourth, fifth and sixth places in each division compete home and away with the sides fourth-, fifth- and sixth-bottom of the league above for three more promotion spots. This would mean a potential change of six teams in each division, taking interest in the season right to the end.

With England’s top rugby players spread out over 12 Premiership clubs and no automatic qualification into the Heineken Cup, it makes it difficult to get any continuity. The Celtic nations have benefited from no qualification process, regional sides and playing as units at the level of intensity produced by the Heineken Cup.

I wish TV commentators would keep quiet while rugby referees are relaying their explanation for rulings during matches, allowing viewers to hear what is being said.

Hugh McIlvanney made me rather sad (last week). Why take anything away from Desert Orchid by mentioning Arkle? What he forgets is that Dessie was British. Arkle was Irish. Don’t make us feel bad because we cried for Dessie. It’s just that Arkle wasn’t ours.

I agree with Hugh McIlvanney regarding the hype over the death of Desert Orchid. Arkle’s record was superior. What’s more, I was surprised the death of a horse made the front pages.
