TOBY MELVILLE

Average 5.4

6 Chris Paterson Gave his side the confidence of early points and produced one memorable try-saving tackle.

5 Simon Danielli Found himself mainly confined to defence and chasing the kicks, both of which he did efficiently.

5 Joe Ansbro Did what he was in the side to do with a solid defensive display. Did not find the space he needed to shine in attack.

6 Sean Lamont Still has tendency to charge out of the line in defence, but made that work as he put pressure on the England midfield.

7 Max Evans In the side with a brief to go looking for the ball but still goes off on his own too often, but did great work for his side’s try.

5 Ruaridh Jackson Played much better than on his debut against Ireland but is still learning his trade at international level.

5 Rory Lawson Made a mess of one possible try chance when he dropped an offload from Brown but was generally efficient.

4 Allan Jacobsen Like the rest of the front row, struggled to hold his opponent and could do nothing to relieve that pressure.

4 Ross Ford Was already under pressure for his place and did little to persuade the doubters with wayward throwing to the lineout.

4 Moray Low Had a torrid time in the scrums with penalties coming when he was not getting shoved backwards.

7 Richie Gray Threw himself around all over the field with gusto, tackling backs and forwards alike and making yards with the ball.

5 Alastair Kellock As captain and lineout leader takes responsibility for the team’s early struggles but showed a cool tactical head.

5 Nathan Hines Not his most boisterous game and was responsible for the penalty that gave England early points.

6 John Barclay One of his better games as he managed to win crucial turnovers and slow down opposition ball effectively.

7 Kelly Brown Yet again, this workhorse was the pick of the Scotland back row with some driving runs and always there in support until he was carried off in a neck brace after a typically brave tackle.

Replacements
Richie Vernon Came on for Brown with no loss of physicality to Scotland
Geoff Cross Came on for Low after 52 minutes and seemed to steady the scrum
Mike Blair Livened the attack with his more direct style
Dan Parks Came on to steady the ship and kept Scotland going forwards
Scott Lawson Helped to lift Scotland to their final effort
Alasdair Strokosch No time to make a big impact
Nick De Luca Came on for the final few minutes and had one catastrophic drop
