Scotland are indebted to English

EDINBURGH (Saltires won toss): Scottish Saltires (4pts) beat Durham Dynamos by six wickets

THE biggest fifth-wicket partnership in the history of Scottish one-day cricket steered the Saltires to their first totesport League win of the season as Colin Smith, the wicketkeeper who top-scored with 79, and Cedric English, the professional at the Carlton club who gave him superb support with 55, added an unbeaten 146 for the fifth wicket.

Durham’s innings was salvaged by an 83-run partnership between Jon Lewis and Andrew Pratt after Asim Butt, the Scotland veteran, had dismissed both openers cheaply. But when Pratt was leg-before to Craig Wright, the Scotland captain, their best hope of setting an imposing total had gone.

The Dynamos, who thwarted a similar-sized Saltires run chase in the reverse fixture, removed Butt, the pinch-hitter, first ball. Ryan Watson managed to get himself run out and Sridharan Sriram top edged an extravagent pull to the gully. But that only brought together Smith and English and there were no further alarms.
