GRAHAM FORD, the Kent coach and former coach of South Africa, requested admittance to Eton v Harrow at Lord’s last Saturday. This was not to partake in the 200th anniversary celebrations but to keep an eye on two young Harrovians who should have a big future in the game. Although ultimately unable to attend because of other commitments, he will have noted that one of them, Glenn Querl, was a key figure in a seven-wicket victory.

Against Eton he bowled as fast as Tony Pigott, who went on to play for Sussex and England, had done for Harrow 30 years ago. Querl took four for 26 and then put on an unbroken 107 with Spencer Crawley. One of the Kent coaches spotted Querl while watching Sam Northeast, who was out cheaply but should be named in the England Under-15 party. There was delight that Crawley, whose stepfather died when the tsunami struck while Harrow were on tour and practising on the outfield at Galle, should score the winning run.

Elsewhere, Charterhouse scored 112 in the last 11 overs to defeat Wellington, for whom Luc Durandt, 15, scored 128. The Repton run-machine continued apace with Paul Borrington (172 not out) and James Blackwell (120 not out) sharing an opening partnership of 314. Denstone in reply struggled against Luke Harvey’s leg spin (five for 35).

David Leeming, 16, has scored three unbeaten centuries and 91 not out in his past four innings for Manchester Grammar School. Will Hatfield, of Woodhouse Grove, beat Anthony McGrath’s record by scoring 151 not out for Yorkshire schools’ under-13 team.
