School kit

Sir, My children have just started at our local comprehensive school.

I was amazed to hear that they are only allowed to wear clip-on ties. Normal ties are not allowed. Is this political correctness (since children with dyspraxia will not be discriminated against)? Is is safety (so that they can’t throttle each other)? Or is it just teacher laziness (because they don’t want to have to bother straightening ties)?

I have written to the headmaster of the school to find out the answer, but have had no reply.

If “strict school uniform policies ‘put children at risk of bullying’,” (report, Sept 1), then why not have, in each school, a supply of outgrown uniform items available for purchase by parents?

This is an ideal project for parent teacher associations to undertake, and the more expensive items would be particularly welcomed. Children soon grow out of their clothes and such a policy would encourage a civilised community spirit.
