Last season Premiership: ninth. European Challenge Cup: semi-finalists. Lost their way after reaching last four of Heineken Cup the previous season, changed coaches and key administrators, and began the substantial changes in playing personnel that continued in the summer. But they were no one’s idea of a soft touch.

Prospects Hard to tell with such a turnover in personnel. Likely to take time to settle into a rhythm but Venter will ensure an edge to their game while letting skilful players develop. This could be the arena for Hougaard to show why he was such an influence for the Bulls in Pretoria, but young English players such as Alex Goode and Andy Saull must get their chance.

Two to watch Wikus van Heerden: Arrived among the first of the South African contingent last season. Now has the chance to stamp his authority as a back-row forward and leader. Bradley Barritt: England-qualified centre despite his background with the Sharks and has already knocked on the door of the Saxons. The next step might not be far away.
