Royalty on course

Don’t belittle the job of steering — keeping a 45ft dragon boat on course using only an oar is not an easy task

Sir, As the former steersman of a dragon boat team, I object to the suggestion that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were “only going to be steering” their boats (report, July 5). I have no doubt that they were up to it, but keeping a 45ft boat going straight down the course with an oar is easily as challenging as paddling.

Both activities, of course, are eclipsed by the sight of a future king landing a Sea King helicopter on water.
