Prince Philip and the Queen are seen surrounded by their seven great-grandchildren in a heart-warming portrait taken at Balmoral which was released today by the royal family.

The Duke of Edinburgh, who died aged 99 on Friday, is pictured sitting with his arm around Isla Phillips, Lena Tindall and Mia Tindall, while the Queen holds Prince Louis.

Joining them for the photo, taken in the summer of 2018 during a holiday at the Queen’s Scottish residence, are Prince George, Savanah Phillips and Princess Charlotte.

The photograph was released before Prince Philip’s funeral on Saturday, which only 30 close family and friends will be able to attend because of coronavirus restrictions.

The Duchess of Cambridge seems to have been designated the family photographer in recent years, having been praised for her portraits of her children as well as her public photography projects. She became the new patron of the Royal Photographic Society in 2019, having for a degree in history of art at the University of St Andrew’s.

The newly released composition does not include the Queen and Philip’s three youngest great-grandchildren: Archie, son of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex; August, son of Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank; and Lucas Tindall, son of Zara and Mike Tindall. All three children were born since the photo was taken.

The photo comes after a day when other members of the royal household shared family images of Prince Philip.

The Prince of Wales posted a black and white photo of his father and himself on horseback playing polo, while the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s Twitter account shared a picture of William and Kate with Philip and the Queen at Balmoral in 2015.

The photo was captioned: “Today we share, along with members of the @RoyalFamily, photographs of the Duke of Edinburgh, remembering him as a father, grandfather and great-grandfather.”
