Royal mystery

Sir, Matthew Parris is always worth reading and I enjoyed his article about the Queen (Opinion, Aug 29).

The monarchy seems to be one of those ideas that on paper look terrible but curiously seem to work. There are many examples of the opposite. Who could fault the theory of Communism? Or comprehensive education? Maybe even anti-austerity. Excellent on paper but in reality they don’t seem to work.

Can anyone explain both sides of this mystery?
