Roman Polanski to return to Swiss Alpine chalet under house arrest

Snow falls on Roman Polanski’s Swiss Alpine chalet, Milky Way as the director prepares to return to his home under house arrest tomorrow.

Polanski, 76, has spent more than two months in jail since being arrested on a US warrant when he arrived in Zurich to collect an award. He won a legal ruling last week and has paid $4.5 million (£2.7 million) bail.

Polanski, whose films include Rosemary’s Baby and The Pianist, is due to be taken to his house in Gstaad tomorrow.

He will be made to wear an electronic bracelet and remain in the house while officials decide whether to extradite him to face charges for having sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977.

He was charged initially with rape but pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse.

In exchange, the judge agreed to drop the remaining charges and sent him to prison for a 90-day psychiatric evaluation. Polanski was released after 42 days but the judge said that he was going to send him back to serve his full term.

The film-maker fled the US in 1978 on the day that he was to be sentenced.

Polanski claims that the US judge and prosecutors acted improperly in his case. His attorneys will argue before a California appeals court this month that the charges should be dismissed. (AP)
