Rochdale’s away day joy

PETER VINCENTI hit two as Rochdale scored four goals or more in consecutive away games for the first time in their 93-year Football League history. Their 4-0 defeat of Crawley yesterday came after last month’s 5-2 victory at Crewe. Those have been their only league wins this season.

Matt Done, who hit a hat-trick in that thrashing of Crewe, opened the scoring for the visitors with a curling strike after 10 minutes.

Vincenti did not get his first until early in the second half, when he converted Done’s pass. He followed that 12 minutes later when he headed in his second.

Substitute Calvin Andrew made it four with 15 minutes remaining as Crawley headed for a fourth successive league defeat.

Peterborough remain top after a 3-1 win against Port Vale at London Road.

Conor Washington and new signing Luke James both could have put Peterborough in front before Marcus Maddison, a recent arrival from Gateshead, struck from outside the penalty area after 30 minutes to score his first league goal for the club.

The home side dominated the opening half, but Port Vale improved after the break without making enough clear-cut chances.

Substitute Kyle Vassell headed in Jon Taylor’s free-kick for Peterborough’s second, with Jack Payne making it three. Jordan Slew’s powerful shot was too little too late for the visitors.

Unbeaten Bristol City remain just a point behind Peterborough after a 2-0 win against Scunthorpe at Ashton Gate.

Gary McSheffrey went close for the visitors with a shot that hit the post, but Bristol City then took control. Aden Flint headed in Luke Freeman’s corner in the 52nd minute to give them the lead.

Substitute Greg Cunningham confirmed the points almost immediately after replacing Joe Bryan in the 82nd minute when he drove in their second.

Fleetwood lost for the first time in the league this season, 1-0 at Oldham. Although the hosts dominated the match, they needed a penalty to secure the points.

Jonathan Forte converted from the spot in first-half stoppage time after Steven Schumacher had brought down Danny Philliskirk.

Oldham continued to dominate in the second half and were unfortunate not to go further in front when Fleetwood goalkeeper Chris Maxwell made a good save from Dominic Poleon, who was making his debut.

Fleetwood got back into the game in the latter stages but could not break through the home defence.

Aaron Martin scored twice as Yeovil won 3-1 at Bradford City. Martin’s goals came in the opening 23 minutes — the first an eighth-minute penalty — before Rory McArdle pulled a goal back for the home side.

AJ Leitch-Smith struck the third for the visitors.

Colchester and Walsall remain without a league win after the sides drew 0-0 at Banks’s stadium. It was Colchester manager Tony Humes’ first game in charge after last week’s sacking of Joe Dunne. The Essex side remain second from bottom, ahead of Crewe who have yet to record a point this season.
