Roadside grieving

Sir, The road authorities should follow the lead taken by the Nevis Partnership (report, Aug 18) in clearing up Britain’s highest mountain. Roadside memorials to accident victims are proliferating: on a section of the M40 northbound the grass bank now has a large box structure with a tall ornate cross for floral tributes. That memorials such as this can be erected and retained raises many questions, while encouraging more such memorials.

Grief and mourning for a road death is understandable but more appropriately expressed at a graveside, not on the side of motorways where parking is dangerous and illegal. As at Ben Nevis, the longer that this is tolerated the more a perceived entitlement will be established.
