Road tax

Sir, An element within the road tax based on pollution (letter, June 14) is essential, but I would propose an additional element based on the power/weight ratio.

A large engine whose chief task is to give a small car “sporty” performance, or a small engine struggling to keep a large car moving, is also adding unnecessarily to pollution.

All manufacturers know this ratio already. To add it into road tax calculations would be simple.
