Sangster’s is on the coast road to St Andrews in the village of Elie in Fife. It’s a small restaurant with no pretensions and was recently named 2007 AA Scottish restaurant of the year.
The prices alone almost make it worth the trip. A three-course set supper costs £21.50 with coffee, chocolates and fudge (all made by Sangster). Sunday lunch is £20 for three courses — and the prices are not low because the restaurant uses cheap ingredients.
On my visit the menu included local scallops, fillet of pork stuffed with black pudding, breast of partridge with a compote of red cabbage, and monkfish with a chive and lemon vegetable risotto.
Finish off with chocolate fondant with white chocolate ice cream or an iced pecan nut and lime parfait and know that Sangster has had a hand in everything from the bread to the sparkling dishes.
