‘Right to buy’ rules

Sir, It’s no surprise that “the Treasury people are hanging their heads in despair” over the “right to buy” policy (“Young tenants miss out on right to buy”, Oct 15). At a time when homelessness is rising and millions of people are struggling to afford a decent place to call home, funding new “right to buy” discounts of up to £100,000 by forcing the sale of thousands of our remaining council homes could be catastrophic.

On top of this, the money raised still will not be enough, making it impossible to replace the homes that councils are forced to sell.

To solve the housing crisis, this government must invest in the genuinely affordable homes that this country so desperately needs.
