Sir, We have lost a British institution in Mr Richard Whiteley, OBE (Obituary, June 28).

I watched Countdown from an early age, and have myself become notorious among my pals as a bad punsmith — inspired by Whiteley’s example. He united all ages with his charm, and he was unsurpassed in his ability to captivate the teatime audience.

An era has ended.
