Return to Wembley has positive effect on Dott

GRAEME DOTT can land odds of 5-6 offered by Coral, Ladbrokes and totesport by beating Stephen Lee in their best-of-eleven-frames Masters quarter-final at Wembley Conference Centre on Thursday. The action starts at 1pm and is live on BBC Two.

The match is an interesting one in that it pits together two players that had been similarly out of form entering the tournament, with Dott, a Glaswegian potter, winning his first match in nearly a year when beating Matthew Stevens, the Welshman, 6-3 on Tuesday. Lee, for his part, was winning for the first time this season when defeating the similarly out-of-sorts Stephen Maguire, the world No 3, 6-0 on Monday.

While neither player can yet be considered to have turned the corner, the return to Wembley, where Dott gained his last success, beating Stephen Maguire in this tournament last February, appears to have had a positive effect on the Scot.

He compiled breaks of 48, 89, 53, 102 and 116 in coming from 3-2 down to triumph on Tuesday and was encouraged afterwards to consider his chances of winning the title.

While Lee’s performance was worthy, Maguire’s assessment that Lee had only had to play to 35 per cent of his game to triumph could be revealing.
