Readings at civil weddings

Sir, It would be incredible if the proposed relaxation of rules on the readings at register office weddings should, as you report (June 21), continue to exclude the sublime views on love of St Paul. It is true that there is a mention of angels — though on a more exalted level than the ode of Robbie Williams, which you say is “in”. However, a perusal of Paul’s text (I Corinthians xiii, 1-13) should reassure any registrar that it contains not one reference to God or to Jesus.

What it does offer is a thoughtful, kindly, encouraging set of rules for the behaviour of one loving human towards another. This is of much greater benefit in the matrimonial home, I would suggest, than the scientific exploration of physical delight (report, same day).
