Rambling breaks that are poetry in motion

Here are some self-guided walking breaks on offer this month that will be poetry in motion. You might even feel moved to recite Romantic verse while on a 36-mile ramble with four nights’ B&B along the Coleridge Way that starts with an ascent of the Quantock Hills in Somerset and ends in Exmoor.

Admire the landscape that inspired Samuel Taylor Coleridge on a walk that passes through his home village of Nether Stowey and continues to the home of his great friend William Wordsworth in Alfoxton Park. Follow the trail to the highest point at Lype Hill for expansive views over the north Somerset coast and Wales and then rest in farmhouses and small inns along the way. It costs £289 a person with Celtic Trails and includes luggage transfers and maps.

Enjoy the verdant slopes, criss-crossed with dry stone walls, and the rugged outcrops of the Yorkshire Dales on a walk from Middleham — with its historic castle — to the market town of Richmond. Sites along the 31-mile route include the spectacular Aysgarth Falls. The four-night B&B break from June 16 with Inntravel, staying in small guesthouses and coaching inns, is £385 a person, including one dinner, two picnics and luggage transfers.

Base yourself at a four-star hotel in the Highland village of Boat of Garten for three nights’ B&B and strike out each day for a different walk in the Cairngorms National Park to spot ospreys, eagles and reindeer. Enjoy stunning views from high plateaus, descend into the deep glens that cut through the mountains and wander through the ancient pine forests skirting Loch an Eilean and Loch Garten. The break with Wilderness Scotland departs on June 22 and is £275 a person.
