Sir, On reading Melanie Reid’s article “Congratulations! Now do the impossible ” (Feb 4), I was reminded of a notice that hung above the desk where visiting RAF aircrew signed for their aircraft, at an air base in the Middle East in the 1970s. In large letters it proclaimed “Work hard and you will be rewarded”, and in smaller letters underneath, “by the advancement of your superiors”.
