Rail planning

Sir, Now that Alistair Darling has ordered a study into the cost of double-decker trains (report, June 22), it would be appropriate to reconsider the tunnel diameters of the proposed Crossrail project, which currently would only allow single-decker trains. Surely the Crossrail design could be modified to increase the tunnel diameter by the necessary amount (less than one metre).
