Raheem Sterling, the Manchester City winger, received racist abuse on Twitter last night after his team’s 2-1 defeat to Leeds United.

Sterling, who missed a good chance in the first half, posted a picture of himself with the caption “One to forget” shortly after the final whistle.

Several accounts replied to the post with racist abuse, many of which contained the monkey emoji.

City said they were aware of the posts and had reported them to Twitter. Sterling, who has campaigned fiercely against discrimination over the last few years, has been the victim of racist abuse before.

In 2019 a Chelsea fan was banned for life after he yelled racist insults at the 26-year-old from the stands. Later that year Sterling and several of his England team-mates were the target of monkey chanting during a match in Bulgaria.

Social media companies like Twitter and Instagram have come in for criticism of late for failing to stop racist trolls posting on their platforms. Manchester United players Paul Pogba, Fred and Axel Tuanzebe are among those who have been targeted.

Last Thursday, Swansea City said they would boycott all social media for a week in protest after three of their players suffered what they described as “abhorrent” racist abuse.
