The comic features Britain’s music in a series that looks at the link between music and location. Adam Buxton examines the influence of British bands in MTV — A British Invention? (Radio 4, 4.30pm), celebrating 40 years of the music channel. Drama: The King Must Die (Radio 4, 3pm) is a two-part dramatisation of Mary Renault’s novel telling the story of Greek hero Theseus.

This Union — The Ghost Kingdoms Of England (Radio 4, 8pm)
Ian Hislop tells the story of the great Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, asking how they became one country. Tonight’s BBC Proms (Radio 3, 7.30pm) features the BBC National Orchestra of Wales performing Saint-Saëns’s Cello Concerto No 1, Brahms’s Fourth Symphony, and Elizabeth Ogonek’s Cloudline.

Tuesday

Making An Impression (Podcast)
Simon Lipson presents impressionists discussing their art. Guests include Rory Bremner, Alistair McGowan, Jessica Martin and Ronni Ancona. Today’s Afternoon Concert (Radio 3, 2pm) includes Tchaikovsky, with pianist Denis Matsuev, Valery Gergiev conducting Verbier, and Pablo Heras-Casado conducting Schubert at the Schleswig-Holstein Festival.

The Exchange (Radio 4, 8pm)
A new run of the series in which two strangers discuss a common experience: today, Saima Razzaq and Teddy Prout talk about the choices each of them made about their religion when they came out as gay. Vasily Petrenko makes his debut as music director of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in tonight’s BBC Proms (Radio 3, 7.30pm), featuring Vaughan Williams, Respighi and Mendelssohn.

Bridget Kendall discusses the life of Patricia Highsmith with her biographer Andrew Wilson and Vivien De Bernardi, a close friend of Highsmith during her final years. Great Pianists At Edinburgh (Radio 3, 11pm) is the first of a series featuring highlights from the past 45 years at the Edinburgh International Festival and features Leif Ove Andsnes at the Queen’s Hall in 2012.
