MICHAEL AND MARTIN

Radio 4, 11.30am

One great film-maker, Martin Scorsese, pays tribute to another — Michael Powell. Nothing unusual in that; only a few weeks ago Alan Parker was doing the same for Alfred Hitchcock. What does separate this particular lionising from the pack, though, is that having been inspired by Powell’s films such as A Matter of Life and Death and The Red Shoes while he was growing up in New York, the adult Scorsese went on to work with his inspiration, helping him to recover from a career trough that had seemed terminal and even acting as Cupid. How? Ah, why not let Marty tell you the story himself?

RADIO 9

Radio 4, 11pm

Johnny Daukes and Hils Barker’s spoof radio station returns, albeit rather late in the evening, with the same mixture as before of programmes and trails. Among the many highlights are the regular advertising slots for Reckless Parenting, the magazine aimed at people who expose their children to danger. Incidentally, Radio 9 has become the latest radio show to attract the gimlet eye of television, so best catch it now, before it loses its edge.
