RAMBLINGS

Radio 4, 3pm

The last of this latest series of walks with a purpose, rather than just pretty peregrinations, has Clare Balding travelling to Glasgow. Here, the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers is attempting to entice Asian Scots away from the city and experience some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. It is no easy task as, for many of the locals, the streets of Glasgow are good enough and they have no need to head for the hills. But who can deny young Clare when she flicks back her immaculate coiffure in a determined manner? Before they know what is happening, the locals are knee-deep in nature and, surprise surprise, loving it.

BALL OVER BROADWAY

Radio 2, 7pm

The penultimate episode of Michael Ball’s latest series of reports back from the ever-fecund Great White Way. Tonight he is in the best seats for Avenue Q, the story of a bright-eyed graduate who comes to New York and ends up renting an apartment on the avenue of the title. There, a bizarre cast of characters, some human, some puppet, live, love and dream. You may think this is a pretty flimsy premise for an evening’s entertainment, but when I tell you that Avenue Q was nominated for the 2003 Outer Critics’ Circle Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical Award, I think you’ll agree that perhaps there are too many awards ceremonies doing the rounds these days.
