Prisoners’ rights

The Strasbourg court omits to mention that fundamental rights to vote under the law imply responsibilities to obey the same law

Sir, Dr Anél Boshoff (letter, June 2) and the Strasbourg court omit to mention that fundamental rights to vote under the law imply responsibilities to obey the same law. A prisoner who has broken the law has declined to undertake their responsibilities. Therefore, they should not be allowed to take up any concomitant rights.

Sir, That the loss of the vote has been upheld by governments of all colours shows there has been the balanced consideration that Dr Boshoff requires. This is the message that the Strasbourg court should reinforce.
