Princess Eugenie has revealed she checks all her social media posts with “about five people”, fearing she may be trolled.

In a podcast interview Eugenie, who has two sons, said she was careful not to “overpost” her family life online.

Growing up, Princess Eugenie, 33, and her sister Princess Beatrice, 35, were regularly photographed by paparazzi for the national and international press.

“There’s been terrible ugly shots of us coming out of bars,” she told Kate Thornton, the host of the White Wine Question Time podcast. “People come up to me and say ‘You’re much better looking in real life.’ Beatrice and I, like many of our cousins, have had really awkward phases. I’m proud of my incredibly strange looks.”

Dubbed a “party princess”, Eugenie was often photographed coming out of bars and nightclubs, including on a night out at Kitts nightclub in Sloane Square, west London, in 2008, when she wore bright pink false eyelashes.

Princess Eugenie said that now a fear of being trolled had made her wary about posting on social media. “I do my own Instagram and I find it the most stressful thing. Before I post, I text about five people to ask if it’s OK, am I going to get trolled?” She recalled one occasion when she had written “your” instead of “you’re” and was attacked by Instagram followers for using incorrect grammar. “I freaked out,” she said. “Since then I’ve been really particular.”

She said she posts photos of herself and her family to her 1.8 million followers on Instagram because she wants people to see a different side of her. “I think there has been so much misinformation and it’s so easy to judge something when you read it in the paper,” she said.

Last month, a year after her grandmother Queen Elizabeth died, she shared a family photograph of them sitting together on a bench. She added: “I don’t want to overpost my children, or my family life, or anything. I do get nervous but I wanted people to see the real me and to know that I have a sense of humour and I take the mick out of stupid outfits we used to wear.”
